Tips and Precautions for Moving in Winter

If you are moving in winter, there are some common tips and precautions you may want to take that lead to a safer and better move experience.

Moving in winter has its advantages.  Moving in winter can be a cost savings because many families with children choose to move during the summer months when school is out of session.  It is also generally a less busy time of year for moving companies so there is more flexibility when it comes to choosing a moving date that works best for you.  On the downside, the weather can be unforgiving!

Here are some quick tips from our household moving division to help handle your move in winter:

1. Think Safety First!

Remove snow and ice from your driveway and walking paths. Treat driveways and walkways with ice-melt. Slip and fall injuries can happen especially when moving heavy items.

2. Communicate any questions or concerns to your moving team.

Be sure to communicate any road hazards (such as down wires, fallen trees, construction, etc) that may prevent your movers from safely reaching your home.  And be sure to give them a way to reach you if they need to by phone such as a cell phone or phone number at your destination.

It is important that a homeowner be present to not only give the crew a head’s up but also answer questions as they come up on moving day.

Worried about moving with your heirloom wedding china? Or that one box you need to take with you? Be sure to let those helping you move share your concern and prepare special items accordingly.

3. Don’t over pack boxes.

Boxes are often overfilled which can lead to the bottom ripping and contents falling out!  This can be prevented by making sure to keep boxes under 50lbs (or less for do-it-yourself moves) and double-taping the bottoms just to be extra safe.  Wet ground can cause boxes to fall apart too so be careful where you put them.

4. Wait before turning on electronic appliances in your new home.

If electronic appliances are too cold, they may not work properly or may break.  In freezing temperatures it is especially important to remember this rule for television screens which should be well wrapped and protected from the elements while in transit.  Give your appliances time to warm up to safe operating temperatures.

5. Dress in layers.

Your home’s doors may be wide open for periods of time where it becomes difficult to stay warm.  Treat moving in winter like you are getting ready for a ski trip.  Layered clothing and some hot beverages on standby can help make the task of moving in winter a much more comfortable experience!
